Question about pet rats.?
i was thinking about getting a pet rat or two but im worried my room is too cold at night. what is the ideal temp for a rat. and what can i do to keep them warm at night.
I used to own a rat, and i never had to worry about temperature. The guy at the pet store said they were very strong animals.
Ive kept my rats in sheds and my caravan- they are pretty good at living in different environments- obviously within reason.
If the room is warm enough for you to be in it, it is probably going to be fine.
I wouldn't recommend keeping them outside in freezing temperatures, though.
Make sure the cage is kept away from doors and windows- windows get very cold at night, and they can get a draught from open doors and windows.
Make sure the rat has plenty of warm bedding- and a friend or two to huddle up with. Rats enjoy hammocks- I had one that used to use old socks as sleeping bags- he would literally crawl inside them to sleep. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
Provide them with a little house that they can escape from the draught to sleep in.
I don't know what the ideal temperature for them is- they have difficulty in the heat, but they are generally quite adapt at surviving in the cold. As long as the cage has proper ventilation, there is some nice bedding, a place to retreat, and multiple rats to keep warm together- you shouldnt have any issues keeping them inside the house.
Im sure they would be fine if it was 60 degrees. Just give them hammocks, cozies, blankets and places to stay warm. All you have to do is stick a fleece blanket in their cage and they can sleep in it to stay warm.
Do lots of research before you get rats. Please adopt and save rats. You can look on petfinder.com and at shelters and rescues.
Rats generally like it cooler so it should be fine. They have trouble cooling down when they're hot, but if they get cold, the can just cuddle up with a buddy (you have to get 2 rats, they can't be alone). As long as it isn't freezing in your room, which I suspect it's not because you sleep there, they will be okay that temperature won't bother them. There isn't really a specific ideal temperature for them, just around room temperature but not too warm (not above 80 F).
Definitely get two. They are very social creatures and get lonely and depressed when not kept in pairs or groups.

Their temperature range is about 10c/50F to 25c/77F. Cold is less of a problem for them - just make sure they have some warm beds, like fleecy bags or tunnels, or fleece-lined boxes. They will snuggle up together to ward off the chills, which is another reason to get two. It's extremely cute when they do this. :)
Heat is far more of a problem as they can suffer heatstroke quite easily in higher temperatures.
Here are some tips for keeping rats cool. Just below them are tips for keeping them warm. :)
