Is my hamster pregnant or not?
i bought a female dwarf hamster a week ago shes a little skidish she hides in her foam and puts her food under hers foam and sits there most of the time sometimes she moves around and is active but most of the time shes like i said earlier is she pregnant or not or what do you think?
answer: It's hard to tell from what you just described. A hamster usually is very skittish when ever you first get them. You need to give her time to settle down first and get used to her surroundings. Hamsters are also nocturnal so that means they are mostly active at night. Its not uncommon for hamsters to sleep a lot. Its also not uncommon for her to hide her food. A dwarf hamsters gestation period is usually around 18 to 20 days. So if she's pregnant then you'll know. She'll start to get much bigger and usually she'll make a nest. Dwarfs can have a litter as big as fifteen pups but she could have more. Make sure you're ready for this. You'll need to find good homes for all of the babies. Be sure that if she has babies that you leave her alone. Do not disturb her or the nest until the babies are at least three weeks old. Do not stress her out either. Just feed her and water her like you regularly would but don't try to hold her. If you try to hold her or the babies she could become stressed and harm, if not kill, the babies. If you suspect she's pregnant then make sure she has plenty of food and water. Try to give her some fresh food as well during her pregnancy. Tiny bits of carrots or scrambled eggs work well. Make sure that the food doesn't have any seasoning on it like salt. Also moderate the portions and remove and left over fresh food so it doesn't go bad. Usually dwarf hamsters will be fully weaned at four weeks of age. Make sure you separate the males and females at four weeks or else you could end up with more babies. Here's a chart that will help you sex the babies:
