My rat seems unhappy, help?
I bought a rat on Christmas and she was the sweetest thing and still is only she has one problem. She seems unhappy when I put her in her cage. I take her out to play everyday, and I even got her a bigger cage. I was housing her in a 10 gallon aquarium, but she chewed on the glue to try and get out, so I bought her a wire cage, so she can climb and have fun, but she just chews on the bars and she will chew up anything close to her cage. I even bought her a friend but she hates her, she beats her up and seems very annoyed therefore going in a frenzy to escape. I have to keep the other rat in a different cage. And at night is when she seems to make the most noise because she knows it annoys us. I'm not sure how to make her happy, can anyone help me?
Get her a friend, I wanted a rat for a long time and so I read up on them a bunch So i had a general idea on what i was getting into as I haven't owned any small animals and one of the things i remember reading was that they are very sociable and will do better with another rat to play with. I'd recommend the same gender otherwise you'll probably have bunches of babes.
she's bored just give her cardboard /newspaper and things to chew on ropes for her to climb on things to hide in pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
did you clean out the cage/toys toughly with water mixed with a some of bleach?
before introducing the other rat, it will take awhile to set the pecking order in the cage so you cant just put them in there and expect them to fall into line straight off
rats are also more active during the night, but please read up on how to sex, male and female rats so you dont have any unwanted litters you cant trust pet shops

You need to get her a friend. Rats are social animals and get bored, lonely and depressed if they are not in pairs. How did you introduce the new rat? You cant just stick them in a cage together and expect them to get along. Here is how to introduce them
http://www.ratfanclub.org/newrat.htmlHow big is her cage? The minimum cage size is 2ft by1.5ft by 1.5ft tall. If her cage is too small get her a bigger cage. Rats should never be housed in tanks. Tanks have poor ventilation.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Do you give her toys? Rats need lots of toys to keep busy. Here are some toys you can give her.
http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htmIt doesnt sound like you have done any research on rats. You really should do some research.
Did you introduce the two rats properly? Just chucking them in a cage is a sure way to have scraps. They need to be introduced slowly so that neither feels threatened. You also need to make sure that the tank is big enough for the two of them. Try re-introducing her very slowly. She is lonely and hates being in her cage away from you. She is most active at night when you can't be there and, like all animals, decides that you putting her in her cage is a sign that you don't love her. At least, she's going to act this way to guilt you into taking her out again and playing all night. :p Re-introducing her slowly to her companion should solve the loneliness problem, although she will always love your attention and want to be with you. Take it as a compliment. :)

It's great that you moved her from a tank to a cage. :) Tanks are terrible for ventilation and can cause nasty illnesses.

Well, rats like to chew on things, and I mean anything will do. First, why don't you try putting on paper shreds or wood shavings on the cage? That way, she will be able to gnaw on something else. If you'd like, you could even put a tissue roll tube (when the tissue is empty) in the cage. That way, she can play hide and seek, and at the same time bite on something. You don't have to worry because those kind of materials softens with water, and since rats also have saliva, they will not be choked.

Rats are more active during the night. There is no problem if she is a bit noisy during the night. If she doesn't make noise, that is when you cry for help.
