I have some questions about getting a pet ferret?
I'm thinking of getting a ferret but I have a few questions to ask.
Would this be big enough as a cage? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/LARGE-FERRET-CAT-RAT-CAGE-WHEELS-RRP-265-SALE-/200561627948?pt=AU_Pet_Supplies&hash=item2eb267932c
I know ferrets bite, but is there a gender which is less aggresive? Should I get a male or a female? Also, does it hurt when they bite?
What do you feed ferrets? Can they be fed the same food as rats have? ( I have a pet rat now.)
Is it okay to just have one ferret? If not, do two ferrets get along?
Thanks ;3
answer: 1. Yes that is plenty big.
2. I have two females & I've also had a male but i didn't have it long & it was old & had cancer (found out too late). But none of them bit but the male did attack and threw both females on the ground just for getting near him when he was sleeping & one of the females screamed. But my females have gotten along since I put them together and never bit me out of anger just out of play.

3. Ferret food ultra-blend mine eat whatever really but they do say it's best to keep them on what they've been on when you get them because sometimes they refuse to eat anything else. Though ive NEVER had that problem. & no ferrets are carnivores & rats are herbivores . I have two rabbits that have a natural instinct that ferrets are carnivores(eat meat) and my rabbits FREAK out and when I first got my ferret the petstore lied & said theyd get along and my rabbit attacked my ferret(rabbit is really big) So i hate to tell you your rat may be very scared of your ferret or the ferrets natural instincts COULD kick in and it could try eating the rat.
& Yes I've had three together, the male was mean at first(he was older though) but they ended up getting along( then again he was sick ) It all depends make sure they are around the same age because younger ferrets are very hyper and older ferrets may not like that and it may cause fights...
Im really really not sure you can make a rat & ferret friends.

In the wild ferrets did kill rats, etc to kill & eat..
If you do get one and introduce them just watch them but i'd keep them in seperate cages.

Have ferrets.
Yes, that is a perfect cage,
I find females less aggressive.
It hurts quiet a bit as they have sharp teeth.
No. ferrets need a special diet, they need ferret "kibble"
two ferrets will get along fine, but I recommend getting only one ferret now, then decide if you want another ferret.
and I don't think that cage is really big enough for two anyway, they are like cats and need room to play, run and climb around.

Past ferret owner (3 of them)
i know they are much happier in pairs and i believe males are less likely to bite but it does depend on how you raise them. I was thinking about getting ferrets myself....until i house sat for someone who had them. They are crazy lol very active and need A LOT of your time. They need to be played with for hours each day and they become bored very easily. Its like watching children! they are an amazing amount of fun if you have the time :)
If u do get one and it bites u every time it bites NOT hard but tap the snout of the animal and say no then hug and love it i did that with my rat daisy and she has not bitten me since. it may take a few times for him/her to understands that means no!!!
I'd actually disagree with what others are saying. I've had ferrets and found that a cage that size is ok for sleeping and short periods of time, but ferrets really need a lot of exercise. Mine ended up needing their own baby proofed room to play in. I do agree that the floors should be covered though. I bought cheap linoleum tiles, cut them to fit and duct taped them together for each level.

I've never known a ferret to bite, but mine were very well adjusted to people and male.
Ferrets do need their own sort of diet, but feeding them raw meat is not good. They sell ferret food at most pet stores now. Kitten chow works in a pinch since their protein needs are a lot like kittens.
Ferrets are social creatures and it's ideal to have 2 unless you plan on being with them 24/7.
That cage? For one or two ferrets - yes. More than that - no.
You "know ferrets bite"? I've had ferrets for over 13 years and have never been bitten.
And you have clearly done NO research on ferrets if you think they can eat the same food.
