Okay so I just got a new pet rat on Saturday ... and then I just noticed today that she is just standing there breathing really hard.? What should I do ????????? Is this normal?!? !
If she stays like that, it's probably some not-too-serious issue, but I'd take her to the vet, to be certain. Make sure she's hydrated and well fed. If she's brand new, then she might be having issues adjusting to the new environment. Call a vet, take her in if you need to.
Hope this helps.
This is interesting because when a rat is anxious it will usually brux, (kind of like grinding its teeth.) Never heard of a rat with heavy breathing when scared. The only time any of my rats have had funny breathing is when they have had respiratory problems, (which is very common in rats). Im sure it will be nothing sinister, especially if you have a young rat, but if it persists I would go to the vet who will prescribe an anti -biotic. Also make sure you are using paper bedding as opposed to sawdust as this will not help with their breathing atall ...
If shes standing and breathing hard then most likely she is sniffing the air. All my rats do that when they smell something different. Its just their way of getting a better idea of what that smell is. Now if shes doing that when you're near the cage then shes sniffing you or some food you may have recently eaten. I wouldnt worry about it at all. As long as she is eating and drinking.

On the account that its in a new environment, its probably scared out of your wits. You'd probably be breathing pretty hard too if you got kidnapped from your home by a giant monster thing and put in a new cage.
