okay so at my pet store they give the gerbils their water in a dish instead of a hanging bottle. I was just wondering, if i were to just put a hanging bottle in the cage instead of a dish would the gerbil catch on?
Yes, they will, gerbils love to explore, once they are in the cage, they will explore every inch of the cage.
They will find out what to do to get water, for me, the pet store also had a dish, i have a water bottle, it was an instinct to them that they use their mouth to pick the ball up and water comes out to them , so yes, they will, i think its an instinct, esp. if they love exploring (which ive never met a gerbil that doesnt explore)

Our gerbils had the same situation it took a couple hours but they did catch on. All i would say is we tried tapping it with our finger to try and show that water would come out if they bit at the end of it. This worked fairly well but in the end it was their our curiosity that made them go for it ... good luck.
Gerbils are extremely curious, and I'm sure they'd explore the water bottle quite quickly. At our store, our gerbils are constantly moving from water dish to water bottle. Thankfully we've ordered more water bottles! But it should be no problem whatsoever.
