i have had my male rat Fenrir for a year now. he has always been sweet and loving and loves to lick my hands. he has never nipped me even in his cage but for about the past 2 months ive been wary about getting him out. once hes out and runs around on my bed for even a minute, he breathes real heavy and snorts and scurrys around like hes running from something and gets rough with my hands. if i just hold him while hes out he stays calm and just licks my hands and sits on my shoulder like normal. but today when i got him out and let him down on my bed he bit me HARD and drew a good bit of blood. i love him and i know hes not doing this maliciously, but i cant figure out why hes acting this way, do you know?
Your best bet would be to e-mail or call Kat Lovings of Rat Dippity Rattery. Just google her website and you will find her contact info. Anyways she is an expert in rat behavior. My only guesses would be that A. there is something in the environment bothering him and causing him to breath hard & act aggressively or B. as he has aged he has developed a hormone inbalance.
