i took him to the vet on Saturday and so i got some medication from the vet and i was wondering if anyone has had any side effects from this medication
i asked the vet today on the phone and they haven't had any reported side effects as they don't treat many piggies as i live in a small country town in Australia
my little man is taking Baytril
he has changed and im pretty sure its from the medication
he hasn't been as active (he just sits in his bed all day)
doesn't talk as much even when he is around his little friend (he doesn't even hump him like he normally does ).... don't worry i've been told i can still have them see each other every day=)
so has anyone else used this stuff with their piggies?
Baytril is supposed to be one of the better meds for a guinea pigs with an URI. The change most likely has nothing to do with the medication. Guinea pigs are prey animals and will hide the fact they are ill until it reaches the acute stage. This is how they survive in the wild but makes it difficult to get them medical care in a timely manner. With this in mine i think your little guy was just a bit sicker than you knew and he can no longer hide it, however, now he is on antibiotics and should be OK. It took my little Hoshi 8 weeks to completely recover from an URI, they are quite hard on guinea pigs.

If your piggy is not eating and not producing poos you should be worried - one of my piggies turned out to be allergic to Baytril. She needed extra care and a change of antibiotics (changed to septrin), syringe feeding to keep the gut active and gentle tummy massage to stimulate the gut. The vet might tell you to continue with the antibiotics , and baytril is the licensed antibiotic for guinea pig, but if your piggy has reacted badly he will need to change antibiotics sooner rather than later, probably need sub-cutaneous fluids and metocloprimide to stimulate the gut.
