i made a house for my guinea pig, and its painted. is it safe to put it in the cage?
It has been years since the feds have allowed toxic paint to be sold since kids tend to chew on painted things. If you used a "normal" non-toxic latex paint you should have no problem. We have been using latex enamel painted wood things in cages for years with no ill effects. If you are worried, when he or she finishes chewing this one up (and he or she will if it is made of wood), don't paint the next one you build
Just to be on the safe side, I suggest not placing the painted house in the guinea pig cage.
Guinea pigs chew on everything, especially if its in their cage because they'll think it's okay since you put it there.
Even if the paint were "non-toxic", just putting in a wooden house could be potentially dangerous. When they chew things to eat them, they break it up into pieces with their teeth.
Wood can cause them to choke or splinters could lodge in their mouth/throat and kill them.

Now add paint to that equation.
I do think that it's very sweet of you to make a house for your little guinea though:)
Go to Wal-Mart or Petco and buy an edible tunnel/hide-away house. Those are 110% safe and my guinea pigs LOOOOVE them! They last forever too
Hope this helped!
NO! It is not ... using vegggie based colors and paints (almost like a color stain) is the only truly save option. Guineas chew on everyhing and if you wouldnt normaly eat it, its not going to be that great for a guinea. remeber they live with it 24/7 and therefore it isnt really the best choice. even with non toxic paints it doesnt matter. those guide lines are for humans not pigs. just like a bannanna is really good for us, for a guinea it is one of the most harmful things you can give them.
Well, I guess if the paint is non-toxic, it should be fine ...
But to be on the safe side, see if you can find any "ingredients" on your paints, lol. And if you see anything that could harm your pig, then take out the house. Kind of looking at nutritional facts lol.
It depends. If the paint is vegetable or soy based, it's safe, or if it says non-toxic. Guinea pigs really like to chew to it may not be totally safe, unless the paint is.
I would triple check to make sure it is nontoxic, and then just watch to see if they chew it a lot.

If they chew on it a lot, I would take it out.
