how do rats show affection toward their owners?

i got a rat two days ago and im not sure if it likes me. it was licking me and climbs on me but i want to know other signs that a rat is happy and likes their owner.
Rats will show affection toward their owner in many ways. They will groom you, lick you, want to be cuddled, will show that it wants you to give them attention, boggle and bruxing.

If a rat is grooming itself and also does the same for you it means they trust in you and want to keep you clean. Licking is also a sign of love/affection. They may also enjoy the way you taste:) Some rats will allow you to hold them for long periods of time just to cuddle with you and while your petting/cuddling it, the rat may groom you on and off as well. They may be peaking out at you through their cage when they know you're in the room or hear your voice and may try to get your attention. Sometimes they'll make you feel guilty (without realizing it haha) for not holding them because of how cute and lovable they are. Go to youtube and find a rat that is boggling. A boggling rat usually indicates a very happy and relaxed rat. Same goes for bruxing which is when they grind their teeth. Boggling and bruxing may occur at the same time as well.
Licking is a very good sign!! Thats the same as grooming that is sign of love in rats. Also if he/she "bruxes" (chatters their teeth, sounds like clicking sounds, kind of like a cat purring) that means they are happy. It sounds like he/she likes you allready. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

You said something in your question scares me ... You said i got A rat two days ago ... I really hope you mean you got two rats, rats under no circumstances should live alone, they are very social creatures. They get bored depressed and can develop health issues if living alone. Not to mention if they do live a lone you NEED to take them out of their cage 3-6 hours a day for play time. Two rats are a lot less work and everyone will be happier , please go get your rat a friend, he/she NEEDS it
Have have a rat. I used to have two. One way of knowing your rat likes you is he or she will lick you, like you said. Also, your rat will let you hold him or her while their eating. They are soo cute when they do that. Third, if your rat is in its cage sleeping, or hanging out and you come up to the cage, your rat will run up and start climbing the cage and try to lick you. Another thing my rat does is he closes his eyes when I am petting his cheek, and he almost falls asleep.

If little to none of these happens, you can build your relationship with your rat by giving it a lot of attention and treats.

I really hopes this helps
When you walk into the room if he runs to the side of his cage to see you/greet you, this is an obvious tell tale that he doesn't dislike you. If he lets you pet you and chitters his teeth when you pet him he likes it. If he enjoys climbing on you then he doesn't mind you. If they are young they will be hyper and not show too much cuddly affection yet, they will be preoccupied with everyhing else . But it will be easy to tell if he likes you or not. As he (she) gets older you will recieve more cuddles and attention. have fun:)
a good way to tell if a mouse or rat is ok with being held is when you pick him/her up, watch the tail. if it kind of wraps or curls around your finger or arm then he is ok with it and enjoys it.
