Hi. My gerbil is about 3.5 years old. He has been very lazy lately. There is crust in his eyes and he can hardly open them. He is making a weird noise and I don't know if he is sick or dying. He does not eat or drink much any more and barley moves around. I don't know if he is cold or not because he is extremly afraid of humans and I don't want to disturb him. Can you tell me what is wrong?
Take him to the vet. He sounds like he's pretty sick. I hope everything turns out ok!
I'm so sorry, that happened to my gerbil (actually, both of them one month after the other, but the first was most like your description). In short, he is unlikely to survive. You have to make a decision - take it to the vet if you think there is any chance he might recover, otherwise just look after him and make him happy. Do your best to get him to eat. I tried giving mine food on a spoon and soaking food to make it easier to eat. It didn't work for me but you could try it.
Is your gerbil making clicking noises? That is a sign of respiratory infection.

If you are going to take him to the vet, do it quickly. My first gerbil died three days after the signs you describe. My other died of a heart attack on the way to the vets so I think you might have to admit that he would be happiest dying a peaceful death in his own home than the fright of being driven in a car to a vet.

sorry to say ...... but hes probaly gonna die .... its very rare to see gerbils get to age 3, so its just dying of old age. im sorry: (
