My daughter lost her pet rat. We have pipe heating, and he crawled into the space in which the pipes come into the room, in between the walls. How do we get him back?
Don't lose hope yet! Here are some different techniques I've heard of to use if your rat gets lost - 9I use this stuff for my hammy all the time)
1) Try putting food in the cage and leave it with a door/hole open near where you think the hamster is hiding. During the night
the hungry hammy might return to its cage.
2) Spread some sunflower seeds in each room, counting the number you leave in each room, and then shut all the doors. (Do this at night before you go to bed) The next morning you will easily be able to tell which room your rat is in, so this
3) Make a ramp with a piece of wood up to a bucket in which you have put some food. Then, make a little trail of food on the floor, up the piece of wood, and finally put enough food in the bucket so your rat will jump on in, when he/she discover this treasure. But make sure the bucket is tall enough so your rat can't climb out the side and escape again. Or maybe you could put butter on the sides of the bucket like suggested in the next tactic.

5) Set food out and TRY to stay awake to see him.
6) take a carrot stick and lay it on the floor tie and a long string with bells onto the carrot. That night I heard the bells and found out where he was hiding because
of the long string. It sounds nutty but it works!
7) Pour the rat mix on the floor in a pile. Then I make a circle of flour around the pile. Finally follow the little paw prints right to your rat.
8) Another very simple way is turn off all noises like the TV or fan and stand very still and you might hear your rat moving around.
I've heard that this works with hamsters, but give it a try!
Set up boxes going from short to tall, working as steps leading to a tall tank or cage in a dark room. Set a treat on each step, put one at the top and three at the bottom. He might hop into the bottom and if it's tall enough, he wouldn't be able to get out. With it being dark, he might be more comfortable and come into the room and if he smells the treats, he will go to them and get stuck in the tall tank. Check in there once or twice a day at the most. There is a YouTube video if you want more information. Here's the link:

Good Luck!!
Live traps are the best if he wont come to you. If you dont know for sure where he is turn everything off and just sit and listen for him, you will hear him moving around. Then set up the live trap in that room, peanut butter works as the best bait:)
You can set a humane trap with his favorite food in it ... my rats are very fond of gerber jarred baby food ... and try to catch him that way ...
