I have a male rat that is 1 1/2 years old, his cagemate recently passed away, and I think he may have fleas. I also had an orphaned baby squirrel in my house for a few days that did have fleas and I'm pretty sure got them from the squirrel. He has small scabs around his shoulder and on his sides and I think I can see small ovalish brown things in his fur. He is also itching a lot and sneezing. I purchased a spray from a pet store that is made for small animals that says it kills ticks and fleas/flea eggs.
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js ... Would it be okay to use this product or should I use something else? Thank you!!!
I'm sure the product is fine. .. but if you had a baby squirrel in your house the DID have fleas .. then that means your HOUSE has fleas. Plain and simple. So use as much of the spray or whatever as you want but there are more fleas waiting to jump on. I would spray the guy, give him a little bath (if you have any cats or dogs send them to a groomer for the day to get a flea dip and wash and then flea bomb your house.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO ACTUALLY KILL ALL THE FLEAS. If you just do one or the other they'll be back. Fleas have a 14 day reproductive cycle so you'll forget about them and then you'll get slammed by a flea wave!
Do it right and you'll only have to do it once ...
You can use it but when you do make sure he doesnt lick himself until it has dried into the fur.
Products like that are generally not very effective, and if your rat is sneezing you do not want t use any type of spray around him. Sneezing is generally the first sign of a respiratory infection in rats and these can quickly turn into pneumonia, you should get him to the vet as soon as possible to get started on some antibiotics, they can also dose him with flea/lice/mite medication (a drop of Revolution cat/kitten/puppy treatment usually)
What you are describing sounds more like lice than fleas to me, luckily you cannot get the lice from him as they are the kind that are only attracted to rodents, you just need to get him treated at a vet and then clean his cage Very well and wash and heat dry any cloth bedding or anything he has been on.
