why is my rat like this?

so my rat hiakru acts all scared when i go to get him out of his cage. i dont force myself onto him. if he is at the front of the cage i will stroke him. sometimes he is ok, but other times he will cower in the back of the cage. but once i manage to tempt him out of the cage and im, holding him, he is fine. he will happily let me hold him, he will sit on my shoulder, pully my hair.
My rat is the same way; does he have red-eyes? Red-eyed rats apparently have worse eye-sight than black-eyed rats, so maybe since he doesn't really SEE you, it makes him uneasy - that's my best suggestion.

But, yes, my rat is exactly the same way and she's perfectly healthy.:)

I'm sure he is fine.

It's good that you try to coax him out nicely like that, a lot of pet-rat owners aren't nearly that gentle with their rats.

Hope this helps.

Also thankyou, BEX, I didn't know that about rats. Interesting information:)
Are you sometimes grabbing him from above? Rats hate that. IT's apparently because of fear of flying predators. It's an instinct. Hope that helps!
One of my old rats Buggy was like this and I finally just gave her away to my best friend's sister. She is now happy and loving life, she loves her new owner.
