what do I need to know before I breed mice?

My cousin used this site ..
Please think about this very, very thoroughly before doing it. There are so many mice already needing homes and you don't want to just be another backyard breeder who doesn't know what they are doing. Unless you are improving the mouse species as a whole, and you need a good understanding of genetics to do so, then you really shouldn't be doing this and will find it difficult to home your mice anyway.

You should not breed any animal unless you are looking to become a responsible breeder and know everything you should know about general mouse care, genetics, and breeding. Ideally you should have a mouse mentor to contact for questions, or join a mouse society so you have the backup and advice you need and the contacts to swop mice over to prevent inbreeding.

Do not start with pet shop mice, as you need to know the genetic background of your mice, otherwise you could be breeding in genetic illnesses. Breeding should be about benefiting the species as a whole, improving temperament, health, and longevity.

Things to consider:

Why are you breeding?

How are you going to ensure you have GOOD homes lined up for all of them? (Bearing in mind some people may try to get them to feed to their snakes)

Are you prepared to keep, in reasonable, happy, circumstances any and all babies that you cannot home?

How are you going to keep your males happy, given that they can be very hard to home with other males?

Do you have the money and resources to neuter male mice so they can live with girls, if they cannot accept living with other male mice?

How are you going to ensure that the female does not have litters back-to-back? (As this would severely damage her health and shorten her lifespan).

Have you learnt gestation period, litter sizes, frequency of litter? Etc

Have you researched the minimum and maximum ages for your mice to breed? You don't want teenage mums, or OAPs.

Have you fully researched mouse introductions?

Have you got the space for decent-sized habitats for all your mice? pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Do you have the time to socialise each and every litter?

Do you have the money to provide decent habitats and good quality care and attention for all mice, including vetinary treatment?

How will you ensure you are choosing the right mice to breed, in terms of temperment, health and longevity?

How are you going to prepare for any problems, such as deformed pups, injuries and health problems?

Are you prepared to handle sick and dying pups?

Are you aware that you will not make a profit, and in fact most mouse breeders are lucky to cover the costs of care and feeding?
