Guinea pig mites? please help us!?
HI,
I never really thought this was anything, until i just read something close to it, My guinea pig has been going through his shedding season to get his winter coat in, but on spot stood out! In one spot his fur it like half way long! it looks as if someone cut that small spot. and there is also dandrift looking things on his fur! what is this! he gets irritated with me when i pet his spot there and that is NOT in his regular spirits! can I just buy mite spray at the pet store? and i also have two birds, can the mites transfer to them! or can the mite go onto me, or his bed, or our furniture! PLEASE HELP ME AND MY GUINEA!
answer: Sounds like it could be mange mites... my piggie Arya had mites when I got her 3 yrs ago and I noticed it because she had large scabs behind her ears and was constantly scratching.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com I would make your little guy an appointment with your local vet and they should be able to give you a diagnosis... there are several types of mites/other skin issues piggies can get. If it is mites though your vet will give him a shot of *sorry if its misspelled...* invermectin.. and if I remember correctly from Aryas treatment they give them two shots about a week or two apart. If you have any other piggies in the cage with them they are going to have to be treated to because mites is transffered very easily between pigs.
If it is mites your going to have to clean out his entire cage. When Arya had mites I did a 100% cage cleanout right when I brought her home from the vet and then another 100% cage clean out a few days later. After her second shot she was back to normal and haven't had any problems since...
If it is mites you will NOT get them. This is the first thing I was worried about when Arya got diagnosed with them. I would just vaccuum/clean etc the room your piggies cage is in and you should be good to go... As for the birds I'm not sure... id talk to your vet about that.

Proud mommy of 4 Guinea Pigs and a Chinchilla!
These are GREAT questions to ask your vet! Nobody online can positively diagnose mites for you.
If it is mange mites, then your exotic vet will likely prescribe either Ivermectin or Revolution. The area where infestation occurs can cause, "unbearable itchiness for the animal and can result in thinning and/or patchy loss of hair, scurfing of the skin (may resemble dandruff) and eventually, open sores as a result of extreme scratching and biting which aggravates the hair loss." If it is mites, you need to disinfect everything, cage, accessories and so forth, and toss all wood products. Mites lay their eggs in wood products, and once the life cycle occurs, they will hatch. You will likely need to repeat this process more than once. The mites are NOT transmittable to humans. For additional skin problems guinea pigs get, please see the following:
