So... for 3 years already I've dreamed of getting a rat. By now I have decided that I want a pair of female ratties ;33 But, here's the deal... when I do finally work up the courage to ask my mom if I could possibly get rats... what do I say when she asks WHY I need rats?
I can't say I just want a pet/companion, because I already have pets. I can't say I want a rodent because I haven't had one, because I do - I have mice. I can't say I want a pet I can train, because I have a dog. FYI, I have a cat, two mice and a dog.
Frankly, I can't explain why I want rats either. I just... do. I'm a compelete animal freak. My life circles around them XD So yeah. But really, I can so imagine the conversation that will happen.

I'm afraid mom has you there - rats are not a need. No pet is. If you can't think of a good reason to get a rat (such as "i have the time, money, and experience needed to care for them") then you're SOL. Again, pets are a want. Not a need.

Mom may just not want you to have a ton of pets in the home and considering she pays the bills.....

I wasn't able to have rodents until i moved out because my mom is terrified of them. When i moved back in to save money i made a deal with my mom - because i was over 18 she couldn't say a thing about what i kept in my room. So my rats where able to come home with me to live out the rest of their lives. Then when they passed i got mice. When they passed i got gerbils.

But if you're under 18 and/or not employed, you're at mom's mercy. Just explain to her that you love animals and would enjoy have rats as well. Or maybe make a deal with her - when the mice go, rats come in (mice don't naturally live that long after all.)

Will i have a pet rat and she is adorable u could say that i would like one because they are self cleaning, Don't smell as bad as mice (they only start to smell if you don't clean out there cage once a week).
