Do Syrian hamsters bite really hard?
My hamster was stuck in an upper level of her cage so I put my hand out for her to crawl on and she tried to eat it.. She took a little bite but i pulled it away so it didnt hurt at all.

Next time, should I just let her bite my hand so she realizes it isnt food? Or will she just bite it harder to get some skin off? Sorry that sounds gross, but I hope you know what I mean..

And it's not like she bit me cause she was mad or anything. And my hands didnt smell of food, I washed them before. what should i do? I just got her 5 days ago btw
Since you got your hamster only five days ago it may not be 100% used to you yet. You could have surprised it when you went to grab it. Hamsters, in my opinion, don't bite that hard but I've been around all types of animals most of my life so I've been bitten by many things. It's not uncommon for hamsters to draw blood when they bite. They won't take your finger off though so don't worry about anything like that. I'd suggest that you give her a few more days to get used to you. Syrian hamsters are generally easy to tame and are usually pretty sweet. If you don't feel comfortable holding her with your bare hands then you could use some thick gloves. Gardening gloves work great. I don't like using gloves because I think it's easier to get to know the hamster without them. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Hamsters are wonderful animals. Males are usually a bit tamer than females, but females make great pets, too.

That being said, hamsters bit occasionally. Sometimes when they feel threatened, and sometimes when they think your finger is a food item. To prevent this, you should never simply put your fingers inside the cage. Talk to her first. Make her used to your voice. Make her feel safe. Also, make sure your fingers/hands don't smell like tasty food (hamsters adore eggs, for example), or she'll bite you. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

A tame hamster will not bite hard, only if she thinks your fingers might be a tasty food. Sometimes, a hamster will lick your finger (males do this more than females).

But to make long story short, no, you should not let your hamster bite you. It won't help the next time.
Let her get used to you. You might be scaring her a little. Don't let them bite you, unless you want her to think that's okay. But I had a Syrian hamster and they don't bite too hard. Maybe enough to make you bleed. But it won't hurt too badly. Good luck with your new hamster. :)
