Bats cannot take off flying from the ground. (Some sites say certain types can, but most sites say they cannot at ground level.) You could put on some thick gloves, push him into a box and get him to a tree or other high object. They free fall to take off, so go up a few feet (5 recommended) to place him.

I read someone warned of rabies. Less than 1/2 of 1% of bats have rabies. Call a wildlife center if you are concerned, but the following link goes into detail why it is untrue that most bats have rabies:
