The other day I was in a PetSmart and I found one of those books that was a "Guide to Hedgehogs".
It confused me, that they would sell one of those books at a PetSmart in Pennsylvania, since they're illegal as pets here.
I asked one of the ladies there and she said that Hedgehogs are going to be legal in PA and soon they'll be even selling them in the store ....
Despite this information, I've yet to find anything on the internet to confirm this, so I came to Yahoo Answers ..
Can someone please enlighten me:
Why would they sell those books?
Is what the lady said true?
Yes they sell hedgehog supplies in the great common wealth of Pennsylvania and some stores even sell hedgehogs. I lived in Philadelphia for a few years and had no idea hedgehogs are actually illegal until my vet told me . The rules are strange and confusing. The last time I checked the Department of Wildlife said if you can prove the parents, grand parents and great grand parents of your hedgehog were all bred in Pennsylvania then they aren't illegal. But that is hard to prove in court. I have family trees for my hedgehog but it's hardly a legal document like an AKC pedigree is for dogs. I know of a lady who the state didn't wait for proof, they took her hedgehogs and destroyed them. Also because she had illegal animals it gave them the right of search and seizure of her property! I am not even sure how that could possibly be legal.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com I have heard for years that they were going to legalize hedgehogs but I can't find any mention of this in the news or on a government website. Honestly because PA isn't a hedgehog friendly state it's almost impossible to get a vet who knows how to treat them, unless you call the Philadelphia Zoo. They used to (and may still) have a family of hedgehogs in the petting zoo. Getting them to call you back can be difficult. Explaining to an expert why you have an illegal animal is very awkward. So I know hedgehogs are addicting and so adorable. But try to hold off getting one until you can move to a more reasonable state like Maryland.
idk if she was right. but i live in nyc where ferrets are illegal but they sell ferrest books and food and cages and toys and everything except the ferret. people still own ferrets even though they are illegal so pet stores supply the stuff for them because they make money off of it. it is not illegal to sell a book about hedgehogs and im sure TONS of people have pet hedgehogs in PA so theres not reason they shouldnt sell the care book.
NOTHING is for sure until it happens ..

petsmart is a STORE - their goal is MONEY/SALES
my daughter owns a hedgehog - they are okay as pets BUT you must know what you are getting into and NEVER NEVER buy one from a store
