Need help with my new rat!?
Hey! I got a 7 week old male rat (Reggie) on 11/21 from Petsmart (i know, bad spot to get one). He seems like he can be very friendly and i know he is still new and everything but he will not let me pick him up. He will come to the opened cage door and let me pet him/he will sniff me with a few little nibbles to test me out but he will not let me pick him up. How can i change this? I also have a male 4month old white rat(Marley) who i want to introduce Reggie too. When is a good time to do that? Please help!
My friend Kendra is a rat breeder. When she gets a new rat, he is scared so he wont let you hold him. First of all, she puts an old rag that she rubs on her body in his cage. He will pick up your scent! But also put a treat on it (sry dnt know what they eat) So he will think "Hey, whoever smells like this gives me yum yum!" He will think of you as a reward not someone who he is scared of. Give him about a week to settle in and pick up your smell! In no time little Reggie will be your best friend

FRENDZZZ! I'm a guinea pig owner/breeder of six!
I've had pet rats in the past and currently have a 1yr old hairless rat that I actually got from Petsmart as well. All i can suggest from past experience is to keep trying to pet him and maybe just let him come out on his own initially and explore things. He just has to get comfortable to his new surroundings and just make sure not too spook him. I had that happen to me with my old rat and he got really scared and bit me pretty hard. I'm not sure when would be a good time to introduce the two, just make sure to introduce them on neutral territory because males of most speices are VERY territorial, and make sure that you keep an eye on both of them when they are together. Hope this helps :)
Well, I just got a rat and he nibbles on me too=) Rats LOVE when you give them kisses or make that sound. I guess it's there way of communicating=D Also, maybe give him peanut butter toast and pet him. Just be kind and speak in a soft voice. First he needs to trust you before you can pick him up.

As for the other rat, they are very social and should be fine together. If you are scared, let them sniff eachother before putting him there. They are both pretty young, so I think they'll be fine=P
