Should i get a hamster or gerbil?
i want to get an animal and came down to the last two, should i get a gerbil or winter white hamster. i love both but cant choose. who bites more? who should i get?
hamsters>gerbils.
neither. there pee smells so bad!!! lol. and its a hastle cleaning their cage out and refilling their water and stuff. get a dog haha
neither get a dog
No one cares. They both bite. Just get a winter white hamster; the name sounds better!
Hamsters are very cute but tend to be meaner unless you get a robo hamster which are usually known to be non-biters. Robo hamsters are really small and cute but it takes a while for you to familiarize with them. Gerbils however become friendlier faster and a live little bit longer than hamsters. They don't look that sweet and innocent though. If I were you I would get a hamster for fun but to be on the safe side I'd get a gerbil.
Unlike everyone before me, I have experience.

I currently own a gerbil because I favor them over hamsters.

While hamster are really cute and fluffy, they tend to bite more often and harder than gerbils.

My gerbil, when she bites me it doesn't hurt one bit unless she's angry that I've held her for about 20 minutes.

In my opinion the better option would be a gerbil but most people get hamsters anyway.

I think most get hamsters just because they're more popular and don't have a tail-I find a gerbil's a furry tail adorable though.

I suggest getting a gerbil. In the end it's your decision though.

If you want a playful/hyper-ish, jumpy rodent-I suggest a gerbil. Oh, and gerbils are awake during the day.

If you want fluffy and nocturnal(wakes up at night)-Get a hamster.

If you want to know why I got my gerbil over a hamster-It's because hamsters are known to be biters while gerbils are known for not biting and being jumpy.
PLUS-Who doesn't adore their long, fluffy tails?
Trust me get a hamster it's because i have a guinea pig,hamster,and a gerbil

Gerbil:

they live longer
they don't bite so much
they don't stink unless you never clean the cage
they're pretty much the same price
they're a lot more cute and curious

had 4 hamsters for 2 1/2 years, now i have three gerbils.
i personally think you should get a hamster. i haven't had experience with a gerbil, but overall they seem the same- except that gerbils are smaller and have weird fur. I have a hamster, actually, and he's running in his exercise wheel right now. i LOVE my hamster though- he's the most adorable thing in the world, and he doesn't bite. Hamsters will make noise at night, so make sure you're ready for that. They like to run on their wheel, which is noisy. You'll need to clean his cage out every one or two weeks or your room will start to smell like pee. They don't drink much water at all, but it's nice to change the bottle once in awhile anyway. They'll eat purchased hamster food, which is a mix of sunflower seeds, grains, dried corn, etc. But every night I like to feed my hamster some different stuff- it teaches him to like you since you're bringing him the food. My hamster will eat celery, parsley, apples, pears, pumpkin seeds, carrots, potato, oats, and more. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
It's really important that you leave your hamster alone the first 3-4 days! its tempting, i know, but you need to teach your hamster to trust you. a good way to do this is put some if it's favorite food in the palm of your hand, and put your hand near the hamster. Soon it will eat out of your hand, or will even sit in your palm and eat. After 1-2 months, I started taking my hamster out of his cage. Now I'll take him out every night or so and let him roam around on the table or armchair, or play with him.
hope you enjoy getting your new pet !

Hamsters are nocturnal (awake at night and sleep in the day) and gerbils are diurnal (awake in the day and sleep at night). Which would you rather have?
