There is a lot to know, but I'll tell you a few things. First off the mother should be fed extra nutritious food. Harlan Teklad 2018 blocks are an excellent "base" food. You should keep her in a 20 gallon tank with a very secure top or a cage where the bars are very close together so they can't escape. Once they're born check to make sure that they have milk bands. Handle them often and early to get used to it. Unlike other rodent pets mother rats very seldom neglect, let alone eat their babies. Make sure that they are warm and provide soft extra bedding (napkins or paper towels are good), but nothing with strings in it as they can get wrapped around the babies.

Have owned and loved pet rats for over 8 years including having some experience with litters.
