Are my rats pregnant?
On the 31st. of this month it will have been 2 weeks exactly since my rats have mated, i had them in with a couple males for about 4 hours and made sure they mated several times, but i am not sure if they are pregnant, and i am not sure they were even in heat when they did mate. I have been taking them out everyday these last few days to check their bellies and to see if maybe their nipples are starting to show but nothing yet. They're bellies look a tiny bit bigger but im not sure if its just cause they are eating and growing (they were about 5 or 6 months when i bred them). Is 4 hours long enough to get a female pregnant even if she isn't in heat?

Signs of pregnancy are a thicking of the waist line (begining to look pear shaped), increase of appetite, in some case agression or dominance, nesting behavior. It is difficuilt to tell sometimes but in the last week they will suddenly look like they have swallowed a tennis ball. here is a link to FAQ about pregnancy in rats, I hope it helps,

With first litters it is hard to tell until about the 18th day or so. Basically right when they are about to pop. Wait a few more days and it should be unmistakable. Make sure you dont house them together. Pregnant females like to eat their or the other babies when there are that many hormones running together.
5 SECONDS is all it takes, not hours, lol. after 1-2 weeks, or the last week of pregnancy, depending on how experienced your are/how your "eye for detail" is you should be able to tell. if its been 2 weeks, they, or 1 of them, should have babies in about another week. it takes 21-25 days. my rat had babies yesterday, and it took 23 days.
