Hi, I already posted some questions on here, but I bought a new female guinea pig when she was six years old to live with my 2 year old female, I made a divider in the cage so that they could sniff and talk to eachother but they couldn't fight, basically I have been holding them both together but my younger one keeps trying to sniff the older one and the older one bites her. I dont know what to do, is this normal? Could my older one hurt my baby one? is there anything you can tell me about this? thankyou:)
Hey,
It happens the older one is trying to assert its authority, it kinda saying "I'm the boss around here kido." They will keep trying too sniff each out, until they establish a order. Here's what you should do. Take the younger one and walk around outside of her cage, make sure the other one can see her. Then put the younger one back and take the older one out and do the same thing. Do this for a week. Then after you have gotten them to know each other, switch the cages, put the younger one in the older one cage and vice versa, make sure they can see each other in the others cage. Leave them there for a few days (2 or 3). Then when they have eaten the other food and slept in the other bed and gotten used to the others smell take them both out of their cages and let them meet on a neutral area. (Be cautious the first you do this, they might start fighting). They'll sniff, mount, and bite a bit, but don't separate until they start fighting. If they get along okay, if they don ' t it's still okay. After 2o minutes, out them both back in their cages (The ones you took them out of before the neutral territory thing you just did) Do the neutral meeting for 3 days, and see how they do, if they get along and the bitting calms down a bit clean on the cages and put them both in it, observe them for the next 24 hours. (You again need to be cautious, within the next few days they still might fight.) They probably will get along. If they don't then you need to separate them. Also, if any of them causes serious harm, like a scratch or something, separate them immediately and forget the bonding, further exposure to each other can cause large amounts of stress which can lead to death. Just be patient and keep trying, the minor bites just are a sign of warning, leave them be. The older one might try to assert it's dominance or the younger one might challenge the older one
