Using pine bedding for a guinea pig?
I've read on http://guineapigcages.com/bedding.htm that pine bedding gives off phenols just like cedar. I was wondering if it would be safe to air the pine bedding out in a plastic tub for a few days before I fully clean the cage (replace all the bedding) and then add some other type of bedding such as Carefresh on top. Would that make the bedding safe for my guinea pig? Thanks!
answer: No, air dried pine is still not safe. I suggest buying kiln-dried pine. When pine shavings are kiln-dried, it rids the wood the bedding most of it's phenols, oils, and dusts. If you mix kiln dried with Carefresh that would be the safest option.
As another answer said, corn cob bedding is a bad bedding. It can cause foot irritation for guinea pigs, and corn cob molds when it's wet (urine counts.) Fleece is actually the safest bedding.
its best to use aspen if you want to use a wood bedding pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
pine and cedar are both dangerous, cause respiratory infections and can burn little feet
no, airing it out will not help it, the chemical is within it, released only when the bedding becomes moist
such as when a water bottle leaks, or a pet urinates, or sweats on the bedding
No the bedding would still be dangerous. Why not just buy care fresh? Care fresh is the best bedding out there! Aspen is good too. Just stay away from pine and cedar. Good luck and don't use pine or cedar!!!
Best bedding and safest bedding is corn cob bedding. It's also the cheapest and can cause no, NO health problems.
i always used pine shaving for my guinea pigs.......i just got the large shaving so they were less dusty. my pigs were fine!
