Also, will his brother be okay on his own?

ya his brother will be fine, and it was just a mis-happen they just die sometimes

I would notify whoever you got the hamster from, as it could be a sign of issues with that line of hamsters.

It couldnt be wet tail as someone suggested if there are two hamsters living together, only dwarfs should live together and they do not get wet tail, this is not to say it wasnt some illness that causes symptoms like wet tail though!

As the hamster is now older it is best to leave him on his own rather than try to introduce another one, pairs often fight anyway and introducing a new one can cause many issues! Dwarfs that live alone often bond better to their human owners, so there is a small up side, just remember you are now his company, so plenty of time out playing with him.
