What kind of bedding is ok for hamsters?
i got cedar bedding and then heard people saying it could hurt or even kill a hamster, and i don't want to make that same mistake, so please answer.
answer:
You should either use aspen or carefresh. Never use pine or ceder.
It can. When I had a hamster I used everything BUT cedar.
go to the pet store and buy like its shredded paper and news paper and just a cage. then put not shredded news papers at the bottom of the cage then the shredded whatever it is. hope i helped
you can just simply use sawdust that you can get at a pet shop.
i normally get some loo roll and tear it to shreds. but it has to be soft loo roll mind or else it'll hurt our behinds as well.
Stay away from Cedar and Pine, the phenols (stuff that makes it smell) can cause respiratory issues in small animals (unless your cage is extremely well ventilated, but it's not worth the risk)

A wood alternative is Aspen. There's also paper-based beddings such as Carefresh and Yesterday's News that work really well.
It WILL! It's dusty, and hamsters are highly sensitive to dust. Also, not only that but when they pee on it it releases something that can and probably will kill your hamster! Please get something else such as CareFresh, an eco friendly, compostable, flush it down the toilet-able, safe, paper product, and with minimal levels of dust. It also is soft on a hamster's feet. The ONLY wood shaving bedding that is safe for hamsters is aspen, NOT cedar OR pine! Please change your hamster's bedding right now! I order you to, lol. Good luck.
Torn up fibre free rags

cotton wool or something similar.

Shredded newspaper or paper. (finely shed though)

Hamsters aren't that fussy really. Just make sure that whatever you use isn't too dusty especially if you are putting it into a confined space like a sleeping house for it.

Owned several myself.
Just like you said, carefresh or those that are similar are the best. I also use regular shredded paper, recycling dittos! Newspaper won't be good because of the newsprint and as you know CEDAR can be poisonous!
No cedar or pine shaving bedding!
