Well im getting a corn snake and was told its okay to keep them in large, clear plastic boxes with holes drilled in, but wouldn't a heat mat melt it?
You should always use a thermostat with a heat mat anyway, otherwise they can cause thermal burns on reptiles which are very dangerous. If you use a thermostat it will be fine.
Depends if you set the heat mat up right. With the zoo med heat mat it comes with little rubber circle thing to stick on each end to hold the tank/tub up to allow some of the heat to escape thus making it harder for the plastic to melt. Also it depends on the heat mat and tub you are using if you buy a really cheap tub for like 99cents man that's going to melt go either rubbermaid or sterlite tub. Also as stated above use a thermostat so if you feel like the matt is getting to the point where it will burn your tub just turn it down to Your preferred temp.
I've always erred on the side of caution when it comes to heat mats and plastic enclosures. I will typically put a piece of glass plate between the mat and the plastic bin as I have had them warp the container just enough to tweak the lid , causing a few escapes! Unless your going with a thermostatically controlled heat unit, I'd opt for the glass trick. No sense in taking a chance losing a snake or, God forbid, causing a fire!
