It is a garter snake. Completely harmless but they do occasionally bite. They do not eat insects as someone mentioned and they rarely ever eat rodents in the wild. Their primary diet consists of frogs and fish, along with the occasional earthworm, salamander or toad.
It looks like a garter snake. They're common everywhere in the US. They're harmless .

from what i've heard, they're not poisonous, nor do they bite, although this link says that they do bite, and it may cause itching and swelling, but it's not fatal.
i wouldn't worry too much about it, treat it the same way you would treat some dog that came into your lawn.
it's a common garter snake, not poisonous, and they eat mice around your house. they also eat toads . i took pics of one in michigan where i live while it was eating a toad.
they will hide/slither away from you. if you do pick it up it will probably "musk" on you to make you drop it. "musk" means pee/poop at you!
Garter snake, non-venomous (snakes are not poisonous) and they eat insects and worms in the garden. It's beneficial and you should leave it alone.
