Cage for my crested gecko?
I need help decorating it...Its a 10 gal tank, with a mesh type lid, with the regular lightbulb and a heat bulb sitting on top( the heat bulb recently went out however)...
I've got the dirt and moss type stuff along with a food bowl and some hiding places.. Now here is my problem..
I want to add some more decor to his cage, but I can't afford a whole lot, and the only pet store near me is petco...
Also, what can I do about the humidity/temp? I can get the temp up but then the humidity goes down.. I get the humdity up and the temp goes down... Help?
answer: Crested Geckos do not need a heat lamp. They come from Caledonia and the temps there are humid and in the 70's. Cresteds are fine in temps ranging from 70 to 83. A 10 gallon tank is kinda small unless it's a baby. A full grown crestie will need a larger enclosure and preferably one that is taller than it is wide. In your case I would put the 10 gallon tank on it's side so that it can climb up the tank as if it was a tall tank. As far as the humidity, you can place plastic wrap over 80% of the mesh top, and that will help. I keep mine in a tall, all screen enclosure, and in the winter I use double stick tape and plastic wrap to keep in humidity. Good luck.
How hot does the heat lamp make the tank? Temperatures should never go above 85F (preferably kept below 80F at least) and should never go below 65f. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
The 10 gal tank is not suitable for a crested gecko - they need height more than floor space and aquariums do not usually allow a suitable air flow. The best thing you can get for an adult crested gecko is either an exo terra vivarium or another viv that offers height.
They only really need spraying once or twice a day in the evening/night, you should allow their tanks to go dry during the day.
Please consider doing more research on what is suitable for their set-up, maybe join a reptile forum where you're able to speak with experienced reptile keepers? :)
