The best thing you can use to kill or get rid of an alligator is THE PHONE.
YOU USE THE PHONE TO CALL ANIMAL CONTROL, the DNR, the POLICE, or other authorities who are authorized and equipped to deal with alligator problems, and then you let them come and remove the alligator, your problem is solved and whatever they do with the gator after they take him away isn't anything you have to even worry about!
Safest way is to shoot an alligator right on top of the head closest to the spot between the eyes. If you miss you will just make it more enraged. Rifle or handgun would do. A large knife in the same spot is another option but it greatly increases the risk of being snapped at.

depends where you hit it, there is a place on the top of the head where you can kill it with a .22 but if you are shooting it in the body i would reccomend either anything from an AK-47 to a 300 Magnum
Gators are protected in every state they occur naturally. You can get in quite a bit of trouble for killing them. Call animal control if you have a problem.
