Okay, so i have two young Red Slider turtles i dont know exactly how old they are or how many inches their shells are but i do know that they can fit in my palm and not overlap.
What i want to ask is I was told to give them chicken liver for a boost of needed nutrients and to assist in keeping them healthy and also to see if it would help with a problem one of them is having with its eyes. His eye is puffy and swollen and he wont open it much. I'm going to the store as soon as it open to get some eye drops for turtles to see if it'll help but does the chicken live i plan to feed them need to be cooked ? If so how do i go about cooking it?
Chicken liver is high in vitamin A. They can get eye infections from not enough vitamin A in their diets. What are you feeding him? This is uncommon if they are on a balanced diet, such as Reptomin pellets and live feeder fish.
Eye infections can also be caused by poor water quality. Even with water filters, water still needs frequent changes as filters do not remove ammonia waste. Also, make sure your basking temps are 95F (use a digital probe thermometer to measure) and that you have a 5.0 or 10.0 Reptisun UVB bulb as well (and UVB bulbs need to be changed twice a year as they lose potency). Both lights should be on for 10-12 hours daily. Is the water heated? It should be!

You should get Reptoguard for the eye issue, it will help to kill things in the water. Second, you do not ever have to cook anything that a turtle eats, there is not microwave in the wild.
im sure they could eat liver, has they eat raw fish, and i would recomment not to cook the liver, and its probably just a minor eye infection in all luck he should get better with some threatment
Don't cook the liver. It may not clear up the eye problem, although it is a great food for other reasons. Usually, a vitamin A deficiency affects both eyes. You might try dripping a 3% boric acid solution over the affected eye. Or use the commercial drops.
Also, with turtles that small, skip the vegetable matter. They need meat for protein and calcium. Good sources are earthworms and bait fishes. Pellets are all right as a supplement. Liver won't provide calcium unless you dust it in bone meal but it is a fantastically good source of oil-soluble vitamins, such as A & D.
