I was sold a red ear slider on Sunday and he's tiny, I'd say his shell is about 1.5 inches if that. So he was apparently sold to me illegally. Anyway, I have a ReptoGuard in his tank that is supposed to prevent him from getting disease such as salmonella. I wash my hands thoroughly after everytime touching him or his water. If I continue to do this, will I stay away from being at risk of all these diseases that the tiny turtles could possibly carry? Thanks for your help!
Oh, and I'm not going to get rid of him, he's just a baby and I want to help him out as much as I can!
Don't lick him or your hands after you hold him. Wash your hands and you'lll be fine. turtle really don't like to be touched much anyway.
And Reptoguard is not going to kill Salmonella, every turtle is a carrier, along with every other animal that comes from a shell, bird and what not. You can get it from a egg shell at the grocery store ...
So again, just wash your hands after touching him or the water etc. And you will be fine.
You are doing the right thing. Washing your hands thoroughly after touching the turtle, its water, or anything that either has touched should protect you. BTW, there are several holes in the law about selling small turtles. The police will not be able to do anything to the seller.
No bigy. Most turtles and other reptiles have salmonella. Easy to prevent. After you touch him, just sing the ABC's while washing your hands. I also suggest getting a fish filter for him. It helps alot.
You should be fine if you wash your hands, most turtles could possibly have salmonella. I have handled hundreds of turtles and all I do is wash my hands and I have never gotten sick. So you should be fine.
i would tell the cops about the guy that sold u him and see if u can keep him then yes if u wash ur hands and all sides if he isnt in the lake then he wont get half of the diseases anyway unless he already has them but ur doing good
To tell you the truth, reptoguard will do absolutely nothing for your turtle. I used to buy it when my turtles were just hatchlings until i did some research on turtle websites and found out it is just sold for profit.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com When I bought my babies, they were literally as big as a quarter. As long as you wash your hands after holding them, you are going to be fine. Adults are a lot less susceptible to diseases from turtles than younger children.
Believe me, when I was syphoning out the tank one day, I used this thing that you have to suck on the end to get it going, and I did it to much and all the dirty turtle water went into my mouth. I have never once gotten sick from them. You have nothing to worry about!
