Little red dots; are they mites?

I just got a bearded dragon from a friend who no longer could take care of it. I was looking at it and I noticed several tiny red dots in between its scales throughout its body. Could they be mites? If so, how can I get rid of them quickly because I don't want them to spread.
Mites can be dark red to black in color. They are easily treated and there's no need to take your snake to a vet for treatment, especially when the mites can be all over the place and the vet obviously can't come to your home to treat the cage. Provent-a-mite is the most reputable product on the market but is overpriced. You can buy a few products at Wal-mart or a pharmacy with the exact same ingredients for 5 or 6 dollars. Equate Bedding Spray from Wal-mart (and other lice products with Permethrin), found with the head lice products, is equally effective. Clean the enclosure and completely spray it, allowing it to dry before replacing the snake. Repeat the process in 30 days and you'll have no more mites. If you have other snakes, you'll need to treat their enclosures as well since mites spread like wildfire.
Probably. Red mites are usually found in geckos, not beardies, but it happens. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Be VERY careful while choosing mite treatments. These are pesticides you are dealing with. What kills bugs is also capable of killing larger animals, so choose carefully. While choosing a mite killer, take into consideration the long term effects. Keep in mind that mite eggs are usually resistant to most products and can take up to 30 days to hatch. Also, mites are capable of going into a dormant state right outside of the enclosure for several months.

If I may make a recommendation, Provent A Mite (PAM) is the mite killer I use. I spent five months battling a huge mite infestation throughout my collection of snakes and lizards with all kinds of things. Finally, I decided to order a can of PAM and it worked within the first week. (Still, it's a good idea to keep using it every 30 days, to be sure that hatching mites and previously dormant mites do not reinfest.)
Mites are generally black not red, but if they are moving, it's possible they are. Treat with provent-a-mite and if they are mites, it will kill them quickly. Follow the directions on the can and most likely once is all you'll need. It's very safe and effective for reptiles as long as you follow the instructions.
Yes they can be mites. Soak your beardie for 20 minutes in lukewarm water up to his shoulders. You will have to completely clean out and clean his tank with a diluted bleach solution and rinse well. If you have any wood in it, you'll need to heat it in an oven to kill the mites. Wash EVERYTHING. Make sure if you use any OTC mite treatment it says it is safe for beardies. If you see the red spots come off in the water, then they are mites.

Do not use sand or loose substrate as this serves as a breeding ground for parasites as well as being a huge impaction risk.
