i want to know if you can tell by the picture how old it is and if its a female!

Your right, they didnt know how to take care of her. She shows signs of deformity from improper diet in her shell growth.
I'd say Yes she is female. By coloration she does appear that way, males are usually much more brightly colored on their heads and legs. Turn her over and look at her plasteron (bottom shell) if she is indeed a She .. it should be sort of flat on the back half. if she is a He, then there will be a dent (helps with mating so he wont slid off).
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Get your girl on a good diet, 60% protein-worms, slugs, cooked chicken, cooked beef, raw liver, scrambled eggs, crickets. 30% greens/veggies, 10% fruit. Mince it all up nice and small so she has to eat the veggies/fruit to get the bits of meat. Also provide her with a cuttle bone for birds in her cage. They chew on it to get calcium
there are lots and lots of good boxie sites out there for keepers to reference. Austins Turtle Pages, has good info and a forum for keepers. Bills box turtle pages are great as well
I can't open the pix ... try again. This is an amazing box turtle care site:
