Where do mites come from? I have never had mites on my snakes just wondering?
I hear about mites being on snakes and this and that. But every time we take our snakes in thinking they have mites the vet looks at them really closely and says nope, you don't have them. So where do they come from? Thanks for your answer,
answer:
Mites come from a variety of sources. They mainly enter people's collections from other snakes brought in, but I have heard of people getting mites from aspen bedding bought in dirty pet stores and even on their clothing after being somewhere else where mites were on the snakes. In the wild, mites are less common than they are in captive collections and are primarily found on rodents, where they then get onto the snakes that eat them. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

You don't need to pay a vet to tell you if you have mites or not. They are visible to the naked eye. They are small, round, red or black and have 8 legs. You'll see dead ones in the bottoms of water bowls.
Mites are small little black dots on your snakes skin usually with a lot of them. If you look hard every few days you don't need to bring your snakes to the vet. Mites need a host to live on a snake they don't come from dirty cages or bad living conditions. You can find them too in the snakes water once again little black dots. They usually get transmitted to your snake though pet stores or vet clinics from other reptiles that have had them. they look like this

Its probably something that you or a pet tracks into your house. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
Mites are usually pretty easy to see on snakes though. They are dark bumps under the scales of the snake, it's easiest to look on the stomach because scales are usually lighter there. Plus, they tend to congregate around the bottom of the water dish. You will know if you ever have them.
I agree with cornsnake.....another excellent place to find mites on ur snake if they have them is up under there chin in the little crack mites love to hide in there....
