Red eared slider turtle TANK CLEANING!?!?!?!?
Ok, so i have 2 RES turtles in a nice big tank inside. I have had them since last march. They stinky. Its ridiculous because i will go and super clean the tank, scrub it out, rinse and soap and rinse real good, then clean the water and heat it up for them in all, and that takes like 2 or 3 hours. About 3 days later its filthy with green alge and nasty green and poopy water with chunks of what looks like turtle skin?? Is there some kind of cleaner i can use that wont harm the turtles to keep it cleaner? The filter i have is fine, and i replace the filter often. My goldfish have a tank cleaner that you pour in the water and it doesnt hurt em, and it literally makes the water very clean. Can i use that with turtles?
THanks!
answer: I know how you feel, believe me. maybe you're feeding them too much or maybe your filter isn't working properly. my filter had food and poo stuck in it, so it was making the tank dirty instead of clean. maybe you need a stronger filter as well. check with your local guy at a pet store who knows what he's talking about, he/she will help you more than I can. also, don't put anything at the bottom of the tank. sand, rocks, etc. will make the tank dirtier faster. hope I could help!

once had 3 RES turtles
I'm guessing that you have two problems. The filter should be rated for a tank 2-3 times the size of the one you have. Ratings are based on fish tanks and turtles are a lot messier. Second, you may be changing the filters too much. They have to build up a colony of bacteria to digest the wastes You are killing off the colonies. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
You might also help matters by feeding the turtles in a different place, perhaps a tub that you can clean easily. BTW, algae won't bother the turtles.
