Difficult to tell from your photo, but it may a Box Turtle, maybe a Three Toed or Eastern.
You will need to identify it properly, since if it turns out to be an escaped pet tortoise, the difference in the diet is great and to feed a tortoise on the diet of a Box turtle would be fatal.
Box turtles should not be taken from the wild. They are easily stressed and may die as a result. It is illegal to take them from the wild some states. The chances are that this is a Box turtle, so you should set it free where you found it. Removing a Box turtle from it familiar territory can also cause great stress.
really hard to tell from this picture. but first you need to look at his feet. are they webbed for swimming or clubbed for walking. just because you found it out walking around doesn't mean it isn't an aquatic turtle. as many will get out of the water to look for food or a new spot to live.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com next. it is a wild turtle and belongs in the wild. if you choose to keep it make sure you can devote to it and give it a good life. as once it becomes domesticated it will die if you put it back in the wild. so make up your mind soon.
it will need a tank set up with lights. one for heat and another for UBA and UVB rays. a place to hide and a place to bask. if it is a water turtle you will need to fill the tank at least 1.5 times his shell length. making a spot to get in and out of the water easily. and you will need a filter or it as well. general rule is turtle need a 10 gallon tank for every inch. so he looks about 1 inch now. but think he will grow to 6-10 inches. so you will need a 100 gallon tank at some point. and they live 10-20-30 years.
as far as food goes ... it has never seen turtle pellets before and doesn't know they are food ... you have tried turtle pellets right? so try river minnows or red minnows. no gold fish. worms. grass, bugs you find outside. crickets. it has also never seen carrots. but might eat them. and no lettuce as some types, the kind with the milky white liquid, are mildly toxic to turtles. so red leaf lettuce is good and so is anacerace. a water plant at the pet store.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com over all i hope you realize a turtle is so cute when he is small. but is a big responsibility and they get bigger. please rethink letting him go. find a good spot along a creek or like a cemetery is a good spot. some place you feel good about and let him go.
It's possible that it hasn't eaten because you took it out of the wild, out of it's natural habitat. Taking wild animals out of the wild and into captivity is illegal in many states . You should go to the nearest pond or nature preserve and let it go.
If I was taken from my home and brought to some strange place I probably wouldn't eat either!
It looks like a baby box turtle to me but i'm not positive. It's definately a tortoise, though so it would be safe to try feeding it romaine lettuce, bannanas, tomatoes, or grapes
hard to tell. looks tortise. try carrots, romaine lettuce, grapes. probably best to let it go back into the wild though.:)
