How can I deter snakes?

Recently I dug away all plants and long grass from around my doors etc to help deter snakes and spiders. The spiders return which i expected but was surprised to find a mtr tree snake (I think) just outside my back door. I live in a area that has heaps of snakes around known to come inside upon occassion (so far not my home). So with all weeds etc gone and keeping area a cleanish I still had this snake at my back door.

My question is what can I do to deter snakes from around the house. I do know there is available some kind of sonic?? Sound thing at a cost of over $ 150 or so that I have heard about that deters snakes but have yet to actually meet anyone who has one and as to whether or not it works. At this cost its out of my range anyways so am hoping that someone will have any ideas as to how to deter these snakes.

I live in a rural area with paddocks either side that are mown from time to time so snakes would be a problem up there if not mown but my lawns are kept low and there are no trees or plants around the house at all. There have been red-belly snakes and other venonous ones around the island also.

A sonic pest repellent wont work on a snake because they have no ear openings and can't hear airborne sounds. Mothballs will work sometimes, but they are toxic and shouldn't be used where children or pets will go. Clean up the area really good. Pick up anything that the snakes might see as a shelter. Any piles of sticks, empty containers or flowerpots. Also make sure there is not a food source for them there. Rodents, other small animals and for some snakes insects will attract them. Personally I would just let them stay there, but not everyone is as fond of snakes as I am. Thank you for showing them respect and not killing them. Many people would have chosen that as their first option.
why would you want to get rid of them?

theyre not doing anything to you!

it would take a 15 foot long snake to eat you, so please, unless they are venomous leave them.

and DONT KILL THEM!
Okay i know this is kinda unlikely, but you could adopt a mongoose. They can kill almost all snakes (besides stuff like boa's and pythons of course) and can be kept around by feeding it.
moth balls, something in it irratates their skin
