Can I use a fish filter for my baby red eared slider?

My dad bought a fish filter without noticing that it was a "fish" filter. He thought it could be used for any aquatic animal. (I didnt have the filter before because my dad brought the turtle that he saved from a pool at the Hampton Hotel he works in) I bought everything else before, expect the filter because we didnt have enough money. So my dad bought it today and its a fish filter. Can I still use it?
Well, it depends .. will the filter strainer reach into the water line? From my knowledge, red eared sliders don't need as much water as a fish! They actually need a cascading gravel hill into the water. The filter should be in the water and the light goes over the gravel landing. The hill/rock landing is so that when your red ear slider gets cold it can come out and heat itself and slide back into the water when its finished. So if the filter reaches the water line, about halfway up then yeah you can use it.
