today i just bought a 2 year old bearded dragon from a woman who wanted to sell him because he didnt get much attention from her sons, when she picked him up today his throat puffed up and he just looked generally pissed off. he is living on newpaper right now with a cardboard box as a cave so tomorrow im getting him sand and a home and some various things to have and play with so im wondering how hes going to adjust. im wondering if anyone has any tips or experience in gettiing them used to you without freaking them out to much, is it possible to kind of "retrain" them if their already an adult?
I just want to point out what the first person said about hand feeding. I don't suggest it because it can cause him to not hunt for his own food. When he has crickets running around and you've been hand feeding him, he won't go after them if he is too use to you hand feeding him.
Bearded dragons are generally very docile and easy to get along with. Wait until you get all of his necessities (sand, hides, etc) and give him a week to adjust to everything. Make sure he always has fresh water. Let him see you once in a while when he is active, watch him in the tank (without scaring him of course) After about a week handle him daily. A lot of reptiles you can't handle daily, but beardies are very sociable reptiles and are easy to handle. With time and effort he should be fine with you. Good Luck
Hold him a little bit eachday. But make sure he knows you don't wanna eat home so hold your hand in his cage 10 min before holding. You don't need to do this once hex used to you. You can the start holding him more and more each day. I would give a few days (3-4) before you hold him so he can get used to his new home. Hope it helped!!
I have 2 beardies both bought within months of each other and raised together for the last year. One is super calm and wil sit on my shoulder for hours, and the other goes black and puffs up if I so much as look at him. Funny guys, they each have their own personality.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Once you buy all the new things and set the tank up correctly, give him a few weeks to adjust. Dont ignore him though, hand feed him, clean his cage out, mist him, these things will get him used to your hands. Then work on picking him up. He should come around
