I have an iguana that is about 2 foot long, About a third of an inch of his tail came off - very tiny amount. About two weeks later I noticed that the tip of the tail is dark brown almost black. About a third inch or so. Is this gang green? If so, what can I do to help my lil guy heal?
Look up tail rot in lizards and compare the pics to your guys tail. Watch it closely, if it looks like it is advancing up the tail take him to the vet ASAP.
You can soak it in betadine to keep it clean, I put neosporin on my beardies tail injuries. I also keep mine off of substarate until they are healed.
Be extra careful when he sheds. Tail injuries can make the shed scales sorta stick and cause problems, soak him extra.
Iguana's loosing their tails is common. They use their tail as a weapon. Keep a close eye on it and if you see any signs of infection contact an exotics vet. the tail will grow back somewhat and will be a darker color. clean his tail with antibiotic soap and apply triple antibiotic ointment. let me suggest you change sub-strait to news paper until you can determine if you are dealing with infection. in most cases the antibiotic ointment is all that's needed. as long as his apatite and basking habits stay the same you should be fine. treat the tail with the ointment daily you may also want to raise his tank temps a few degrees to help him fight infection to be on the safe side. hope this helps
