a friend of mine is going to be moving from her house soon and she is willing to give me her baby desert tortoise. she said he is still pretty small but from what ive read and seen, they can get to be pretty big. does anyone know of any particular sites that tell me how to care for them?
I agree with madsnakeman. But, if you are going to take this tort anyways, you might as well care for it properly:
http://www.chelonia.org/Articles/Gagassi ... You're right, this tort gets big. The enclosure size for an adult will need to be 4ft x 8ft. For torts, using a "turtle table" is the most practical enclosure. It is basically a bookshelf laid on its back. Here's some instructions for building one; you just need to adjust the dimensions:

try kingsnake.com they may have some breeder sites you can check out. see if you can find reptiles magazine, it has all sorts of advertisements for breeders . check to see if there is a herpetological society in your area the local pet shop owner should be able to tell you if there is one. if there is get the name and phone number of the president of the local herp society, they can certainly point you in the right direction in the area where you live. you can also check to see if there is a state wide herp society. hope this helps
If it is from a desert here in the US, it will not get that large, about the size of a small dog, most just eat lattice, carrots, and apples, along with some grass. Public library has more on them
Search on Google for websites. It'll give you tons, plus, it will be from people's experience, considering they're the ones who wrote the site.

Also, be aware that they are protected and you're required to obtain a permit in order to legally possess them.
