Help! What type of snake is this?

I found this guy: http://gallery.me.com/ken.muench # 100031/snake in my finished basement under the couch. I have 2 small kids and now I'm worried the snake's mom is hanging around. The guy I caught is about 6 inches. Anyone with any solid idea what it is, please let me know if it's poisonous ... thanks!
It's a non-venomous baby rat snake; either a yellow rat snake, gray rat snake, or a black rat snake. What state?

Yep, it's a black rat snake. As per this range map, they are found in the Chicago area.

Yes, it does look like a juvenile fox snake, which are also found in NE Illinois.

But fox snakes have more rounded edged saddles "lateral blotches" which they will retain for their entire lives, while juvenile black rat snakes have squarish saddles. Note the rounded saddles of the juvenile fox snake above and compare with the jagged saddles of the juvenile black rat snake below. You will also notice extensions on the corners of most of the saddles. These extensions will eventually connect and create lines, and finally the full lateral body will become uni-color black. well it looks long than 6 inches that is for sure, it looks like a type of python it's not poisonous you can tell by the shape of it's head, a poisonous snake will have a diamond shaped head and a non poisonous has more of a round head, if you have a wildlife center around your area I would suggest taking it there and they can release in the proper area for you. I agree with the person that said rat snake I totally forgot about the rat snake and no a rat snake isn't poisonous either
Im pretty sure that is a corn snake, i own a pet corn snake with the same coloring. corn snakes are not venomous and are very calm and hardly ever bite.

here are some picture of corn snakes of this type to help you identify it. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

look at the first few pictures, (they don't Develop the yellow on there neck until they are older)
Knowing that you're in Chicago helps a lot. It is without a doubt a black rat snake, a harmless snake that can reach lengths of 6 to 8 feet. They are common throughout the eastern half of the United States and eat rodents and birds. They get darker in color as they grow and adults tend to be solid black in color.
I ' m going to have to agree with the fellow answerers, either rat or corn, but I'm leaning more on the rat snake. but shes a beaut mate. id keep it if i were you if not sell it yeah, cause id sure buy it off yah, down here in Australia, they sell for like $ 120 +
That's a good looking little guy you got there.

Its either a rat snake or a corn snake.

None of which are venomous, but on the better side for you, you could make about 70 bucks! Sell this little sucker to a reptile store! Or online to reptile breeders.

These snakes are docile. Very friendly. Don't be afraid to handle him. (:

You could keep him in a tupperware box with punctured holes, and mat it with some paper towels until you find somewhere for him to live.

Good luck to you and the little critter!
Looks pet friendly to me. As in, I would keep it as a pet. If it bothers you then you can just kill it and bury it in the yard.
