Under tank heaters for leopard Geckos? And other questions on LGs?
Hi im James and I have an approximately 4 year old LG and have been keeping him in a 10 gallon terrarium. Im going to get a 20 Gallon terrarium for him and I want to have the appropriate temperature for him. I want to get an UTH but don't know how to use it. I know it can cause crackes in glass so how do I prevent that? What do I do when I go on vacation? Should I ever turn off the UTH like at night or something? I don't want to burn my LG ether so what do I do about that? I want answers from people who actually have experience with LGs. Not someone who just wants points. Idd appreciate any help. :)
answer:
Under tank heaters are very easy to use. You take the paper off the sticky side and apply the UTH to the bottom of the tank on one of the sides. Not in the middle as it will not setup the heat gradient. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

As far as cracking the glass the only way I know of how it would do this is that water comes in contact with the glass above the UTH. This can be avoided by placing he humid hide and water dish on the opposite side of the tank. Also if you clean with water unplug the UTH and allow it and the glass to cool down before wetting. The packaging of the UTH mentions this.

When I go on vacations I have a friend come over and check on them, feed and water them. If the vacation is just a day or two it is fine alone.

Nope, the UTH can be left on 24/7. Leopard geckos are nocturnal and will come out at night to lay on it. Having a UTH but not using it at night would be a waste of time.

Make sure you have a substrate that the gecko cannot dig in to get to the glass. UTHs often get 100+ degrees which is hot enough to seriously injure the gecko. I use slate tiles with a thin layer of sand under the tiles which works wonderfully as its natural, safe and the gecko cannot get under it. I highly suggest it.
