What should I breed my normal Corn Snake with?
I have a normal corn snake and i am thinking of breeding it... I know that unless i know the het it carries, and breed it in that het, i will only get normal corns. I bought him at petco and i believe he had albino, normal and anery in his tank. I called them to ask if there was anyway to tell the het and ofcourse their "reptile expert" had no idea what i was talking about. So my question is should i try to wing it and breed him with like a anery corn with an albino het.... Or is there something else i could breed him with to get a different coloration beside normal. Or is there a way i can take him to a vet and get like a blood test done.
answer:
I would probably breed him with a snow. That way you can see if he potentially has both amel and anery hets. As far as I know there are no corn snake DNA tests, if they did exist they would be extremely expensive. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Make sure you can find homes for the 12-34 babies your snake could potentially produce. Don't assume pet stores or your friends will want them. Breeding isn't something you just do for fun, you need to consider the well being of your animals.
There is no way to tell a het from a non het without breeding it. I agree that you should breed it to a snow since snows carry both the amel (albino) and anery genes. Ignore Jesse's answer since he clearly doesn't know what he's talking about.
I think you should try to breed him with a dog that would be so cool. I love dogs and snakes so a dogsnake would be wow.
There is absolutely no way to tell if your snake is het for anything. Most of the snakes Petsmart gets are from someone who is just breeding them and then dumping them at the petstore for wholesale. Most likely they aren't carrying any hets. Albinos and anery's are very common hets though. The only way to test it would be to breed it to an albino or an anery and see what you get. If you breed to either one and get normals, there is at least no het there for either one of those. If you do, then you'll know. Hard to tell who you should breed to though. You could pair him off to two females, one albino, one anery and see what they produce. I've bred my males off to two females before and had great success. He was full grown and 3 years old at the time. I placed him with one female in a breeding tub, let them hook up and then once they were done, placed them back in their cages. I then waited 2-3 days before pairing him up again. I never leave my breeding pairs together and I always give the male several days between breeding to build up more sperm. I've had very good success with 100% fertile/hatch rates. Make sure your females are at least 3 years old and over 300 grams if possible. They lose a lot of weight during pregnancy and a female that's too small will suffer for it.
