Well many snakes are constrictors, but there are many that are too small to do any damage if they did constrict, in case that's what you are concerned about. Corn snakes, milk snakes and king snakes are all constrictors, but all good for a first snake, and will be fine in that sized tank. You could house two corns together, but it is generally better not to. There are problems associated with this, such as females getting stressed from males trying to breed with them all the time, feeding related issues and if one has a problem with its health, it may spread to the other etc. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

@tyler: Snakes may still breed even if you don't brumate them first.
Corn snakes are constrictors in that they will squeeze prey to death, I'm assuming you just mean no large boas or pythons. Corn snakes do make an excellent beginner snake. It is possible to keep two together, but there is always risk. They are cannibalistic and may attempt to harm each other even if they are the same size. You should also always feed them separately. Also if you have a male and female they will breed which will result in a large number of offspring and put strain on your female's body.

You could also consider a ball python. They are about the same size as a corn snake though they are more muscular. They tend to be docile and could live happily in a 40 gal. tank.
the anser above me is a very good one all though the corns will not breed unless you hibernate them and try to breed them.
