I saw a garter snake on the sidewalk today, very small. So I gently picked it up so I could see it, it was very lethargic, so, worried that it was scared and playing dead, I put it back down and went back inside. When I came back around five hours later, it was still lying in the same position. I was worried, so I brought him to a less exposed area on a rock and decided to leave him there so he could leave. When I came back, his mouth was wide open. He does not seem to be closing it. What is wrong?

You shouldn't do anything with it, please just leave it be.
The snake is wild, and it'll be like messing with nature.
