Mississippi Map Turtle & 55G Tank?
I am buying a Mississippi Map Turtle Baby and his home is in a 55G tank. Im looking for a filter that will keep the clean up on the tank at a minimum. Something that will keep my water clean and clear and ive also read they like fast moving water. Does anyone know from experience any good underwater filters? I don't want one that hangs on the side because the water cannot go to the very top or he will escape. I do not want to be paying 100+$ for a filter if i don't need to because the turtle itself is going to cost me 100$ to buy and ship to me, than the heaters/lamps and tank accessories are quiet costly too. Im trying to keep the price as low as possible.
Thank You.
answer: Look for the Eheim 2213 canister filter. It is not cheap by any means, but compared to other brands the price is great, and it is one of the top rated filters for heavy waste tanks. It costs $94 with shipping from petsmart.com, and I'm sure you can find a discount promo code; they always have some sort of offer available, especially on big ticket orders. Like I said, still nor cheap, but you WILL get your money's worth in the long run. If you can't buy this filter, look for someone selling a canister filter on craigslist. You can get perfectly good equipment for much less than you could at any store. Don't waste your money on an UGF. These are fine in fry tanks or betta tanks, but are horrible for high waste producing fish or turtles. They will clog up very quickly and will only be an unnecessary headache. If you decide to go with just an internal power filter, make sure you get one rated for triple your tank size, and rinse out the filter fiber every 2-3 days to make it last longer.
